Visual chronicles of Japan:

Fortunally I had the chance to see Kyoto under a rainy weather, usually this town is portraited during spring time for its beautifull national anthem of cherry blossom where flower’s petals floating in the air giving the surreal atmosphere. The pattern above reflects my thoughts about the rain in Kyoto. Inks and water on notebook.

Gion Shijo in Kyoto around 5pm. If Gojira ( Godzilla ) appeared was going to be a perfect scenario.

This photo recall me to the structure of Kanji wrinting system, the Kaisho remind me the building on the left and the Gyosho style the tree on the right of the picture. This is very frequent in the visual system of Japan, the geometry in harmony with the random of the nature.

Top left, a test of the hanko( seal ) red inkstamp. Below a note about a book of Tensho calligraphy style and it’s price well written by the helpfull person in the calligraphy shop in Kyoto. Right top, a peeled Polaroid® transfered on my notebook. Below, my tag.

I designed A spraycan dot motive for a classic scarf for a limited edition for Combo® brand. Available in red and blue.

Check this classic Japanese animation series from 1968 based on a little boy Ninja Sarutobi Sasuke wearing a red with white polkadots. Pretty avant garde.. Pre-Comme des Garcons!!. not to mention that in the Anime series the Ninja clan enemy of little Sasuke was the clan of Hattori Hanzo..( the name of the swordsmith in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill)

Observing this piece, seems like Japan is fully harmonized with the unexpected beauty of the randomness, you can find this in the brush flow of the Kanji and the way the moss grow in the stones positioned in the moist gardens. The full interaction of the nature matters and art is way deep to make you to start confusing where one begin and one end. Go to Japan and breath.

There is truly something spiritual in Shodo calligraphy, and the way brushstrokes melt in architecture, check the entrance of that restaurant located in beautiful Nakameguro Tokyo area. Still in Tokyo, i passed thru a shop of vintage accessories and there was cats sneaking through items..

The alchemy is the same, patience, a film negative, liquid photo emulsion and a surface to impress your image. Spread the photo emulsion to make a surface photosensitive take you to a whole another journey, when the emulsion is at the right temperature its like yogurt and as you can imagine you must spread it on the surface with a brush a darkroom. The amount of the emusion on the surface is not equally distributed, and the final result change on the amount of the liquid that is in the brushstrokes. The fact that brush strokes will appear on the picture makes this close-by a painting. The depth of greytones and the chalky white make this beyond the act of photography. I took that photo on the rooftop of a building in Brooklyn in a very cold afternoon.
